Registrations for each retreat are welcome as soon as the previous one in the same program is over (i.e., you can register for the first retreats as of 1 p.m. on August 7, 2014 – the end of Yearly Meeting.) For more information and to register, go to our websites at www.neym.org/youth-programs or contact Gretchen Baker-Smith, coordinator of both programs, at firstname.lastname@example.org, 508-997-0940 (home) or 508-287-6441 (cell phone).
Please be advised that the next JYM Retreat scheduled to be held at Woolman Hill, May 9-11, has moved to a wait list. For further information, please be in touch with me. Thanks.
JYM and JHYM Retreats are again sponsoring a special retreat for 6th graders (or 7th graders that missed it last year) called Bodyworks. This one-of-a-kind weekend will be held at Westport Meeting on March 7-9, 2014. I am sending this announcement out far and wide with hope that you will help us spread the word.
The annual 6th Grade Retreat will be held March 7-9, 2014 at Westport (MA) Friends Meeting.
If you have a 6th grader in your house -- or a 7th grader that missed it last year -- I urge you to please read the description at the link and consider registering them. Highlights of this weekend include higher staff to child ratios in a smaller format, making handprint T-shirts, eating special foods, sharing age-appropriate information about their changing bodies, emotions, friendships, and sexuality, and hearing loving reminders about safety and self care. For much more please click link below:
I think that what I can share about why this retreat is so important is this: Though most of our children receive health education in their schools, very few of them have the opportunity to ask questions, share joys and struggles, and celebrate this time in a safe, trusting, and joy-filled spiritual community with adults they know and trust. The information and compassion they almost always gain about the other gender's experience through these transforming years is especially unique and beautiful. They arrive on Friday evening more nervous than usual for a JYM or JHYM Retreat, but they leave on Sunday feeling more confident, more connected to their peers, and deeply celebrated. It really is an extraordinary weekend.
I am happy to answer any and all questions from parents or young people about this retreat. Registrations can be done through either the JYM or the JHYM site:
Please note that we have moved the date of the May, 2014 JYM Retreat a week earlier than originally publicized. It will be May 9-11, 2014 at Woolman Hill. I apologize for any inconveniences or confusions that this change in date causes. (Our youngest son is graduating from college the next Saturday, and I can’t miss it!) Thank you!
Pleased be advised that the next JYM Retreat scheduled for January 17-19, at Wellesley Friends Meeting, has moved to a wait list. This is our ever popular annual Sculpey Retreat, and we have filled to capacity.
Please contact me if you would like to have your child's name added to our wait list. Thank you.
Thank you for a wonderful retreat at Woolman Hill 2 weeks ago! There were 43 of us all together, including 11 first time children and 5 first time staffers, and with God's grace and help, we created a wonderful community. I am particularly grateful to our staffers, who gave so much of themselves at this retreat.
You can see the photos taken by our junior staffer Liam O'Connell here:
http://jhym-community-photos.smugmug.com/JYMRetreats/JYM-Sept-2013/32087125_4fmjJt Parents and grandparents are encouraged to share them with their children! If you would like a copy of any photo(s), please send me an email with the photo number, and I'll email you a full size jpg of it. As always, too, if there are any that you do not feel comfortable having displayed on our retreat photo gallery, simply let me know and I will remove it immediately.
Also, registrations for the next retreat (Nov. 15-17 at Westport Meeting) are being accepted at any time. You can register here: http://quakermedia.typepad.com/jym_retreats/jym-retreat-registration.html
Wishing you joy and Light.
Dear Parents, Please note that the September JYM Retreat has moved to a waiting list. If you would like your child to be put on this list, please email Gretchen at email@example.com.
Loving greetings to you and your family in the midst of this alternating humid-rainy and blazing hot summer! Though I’ve used the expression for years, the phrase “growing like a weed” has taken on new meaning as I’ve struggled to keep up in our garden. I hope your children are growing as well as my bittersweet!
Many of you already know me, but I want to introduce myself as the soon to be new coordinator of JYM Retreats. You may read my Bio HERE. It is amazing to think that I’ve staffed JYM with Kevin Lee for over 24 years – it has been such an incredible gift and joy. His generous mentoring, expertise in pastoral care and youth work, and ministry of presence have deeply informed my own ministry and will continue to guide and inspire both JYM and JHYM for many years to come. I will miss our partnership in ministry deeply, but is truly my honor and joy to be stepping into the role (though not his shoes). And I am so happy that Kevin hopes to staff some JYM (as well as some JHYM Retreats) in the coming year – we will all be so delighted to have him with us!
RETREAT SCHEDULE AND REGISTRATION PROCESS
You can check out the 2013-2014 JYM Retreat Schedule HERE. As you’ll see, I’ve pretty much kept to the same dates and locations for this coming year.
Please note a couple of changes to the registration process.
Kevin recently moved the JYM Retreat photos over to the JHYM
Retreat photo site. Each program has its
own section of photos. You can visit the
http://jhym-community-photos.smugmug.com/ . Once on the photo site, click on the category “JYM Retreats” at the top left side, which will display only the JYM Retreat photos. (You’re most welcome to also view the JHYM Retreat Photos too!)
AS WE ALL MAKE THIS TRANSITION TOGETHER
I am aware that you and your child(ren) may have some worries. Please be in touch with me about concerns big and small – from whether or not we will continue to have breakfast bubble gum and dress up time (yes to both) to how we will approach a particular theme. I trust that with God’s grace and presence, and our extraordinary circle of staffers, junior staffers, and families, that JYM will continue to be a safe and loving community for our precious children.
I look forward to seeing many of you at Yearly Meeting in a couple of weeks and at a JYM Retreat this coming year. Thank you for all of your love, support and prayers. Know that I am holding all of you in my heart and prayers, too.
With much love,
14 Norcroft Street, Dartmouth, MA 02748
