JYM and JHYM Retreats are again sponsoring a special retreat for 6th graders (or 7th graders that missed it last year) called Bodyworks. This one-of-a-kind weekend will be held at Westport Meeting on March 7-9, 2014. I am sending this announcement out far and wide with hope that you will help us spread the word.
The annual 6th Grade Retreat will be held March 7-9, 2014 at Westport (MA) Friends Meeting.
If you have a 6th grader in your house -- or a 7th grader that missed it last year -- I urge you to please read the description at the link and consider registering them. Highlights of this weekend include higher staff to child ratios in a smaller format, making handprint T-shirts, eating special foods, sharing age-appropriate information about their changing bodies, emotions, friendships, and sexuality, and hearing loving reminders about safety and self care. I think that what I can share about why this retreat is so important is this: Though most of our children receive health education in their schools, very few of them have the opportunity to ask questions, share joys and struggles, and celebrate this time in a safe, trusting, and joy-filled spiritual community with adults they know and trust. The information and compassion they almost always gain about the other gender's experience through these transforming years is especially unique and beautiful. They arrive on Friday evening more nervous than usual for a JYM or JHYM Retreat, but they leave on Sunday feeling more confident, more connected to their peers, and deeply celebrated. It really is an extraordinary weekend.
I am happy to answer any and all questions from parents or young people about this retreat. Registrations can be done through either the JYM or the JHYM site:
